A Source of Scarecrows
Along with scaring away birds maybe these countryside mannequins are there to keep a watch on us.
When walking through a partially harvested cornfield, if you encounter a scarecrow that appears to have escaped from a horror film, what do you do? This is the challenge you are about to face you as you enter the world of City Legends – The Witness in the Rye, a Hidden Object Adventure game from the extensive catalogue of Domini Games titles.
Available in Collector’s Edition format, this excursion into a world where the term Harvest Festival takes on another meaning than that generally accepted and could send a shiver down your spine. Once ensconced into this environment, you get the chance to replay Hidden Object scenes, mini game puzzles and watch linking videos. There is also the chance to access an extra chapter and view collectibles such as magic seeds, scarecrow figures and winner badges as part of its bonus offerings once the main game has been completed.
Having set up a playing environment with its screen size, special effects activated and sound levels set for different aspects, you can opt to play the game in Casual, Advanced, Hardcore or Custom difficulty level. You will be cast in the role of a well-known author of Horror stories. In an effort to bring inspiration, you follow a lead to investigate the strange going-ons at the village of Darkwood and its hotel of the same name.
Initial observations are quiet promising as the local community seem to rely on old world facilities and the hotel could do with a make-over due to the passage of time and an apparent scarcity of staff. You also encounter rumours relating to guests going missing from the hotel. Not to be put off you start to investigate the area further and make use of the different features we have come to expect from Domini Game titles.
Tools providing access to a Journal with sections for Notes and Tasks, a Map, Inventory, Strategy Guide and Hint feature decorate the base of the screen. Pop-out icons that reveal details of Collectible items found and decisions made are located on either side of the screen. Overlaid windows are used when examining areas with split screen displaying characters when they have something to impart with spoken dialogue and printed text.
As you discover more about the missing guests, the threat of Red Rye and its connection to Harvest Festival and those with red eyes, you begin to realise than most of the local community are involved in what is going on. Fortunately the discovery of a remedy can help you deal with some of these issues. You will also need to take on 31 Hidden Object scenes using a variety of formats. Each one will give you the opportunity to switch to Match 3 game play. If looking for a break from Hidden Object complexity. The game also features 35 mini game puzzles that allow you to select either an Easy or Hard version. These puzzles can involve logical thinking as elements are manipulated with occasional use of hand/eye coordination to challenge your skill.
