SpyCatcher 3.51

Sounds exciting, in fact if it does what it should, it will enable you to have a quiet and peaceful life with your PC as it should deal with all the Spy Ware that tries to infiltrate your PC.

Installation took only three minutes and only – what times we live in – 21MB of hard disc space. However it will try to install trials of other packages something you may or may not want, however it understands cancel.

It then wants to connect to the Internet with your serial number and email address to update to the latest version, something I have no objection to however I have yet to see if that will lead to a barrage of emails offering me the ‘moon’.

The first scan took close to 30 minutes and as far as I can see you need to start it manually each time as there seems to be no way to say ‘do each Thursday at 10AM’ or any other routine.

First time it has to compile the number of fingerprints 85,080 then it detects the number of running processes – I had two open programs in the taskbar it and Outlook Express, in fact it found 459 running programs – somewhat more than I expected – then it looks at 5040 registry items and finally checks 115,184 files and folders. In all it found 10 items, four it confirmed as Spyware and these I got it to remove and six that it labelled suspicious, these I left.

The next day I ran it again a little quicker this time as it already had fingerprints and a lot of temporary files were got rid of yesterday. It found 463 running processes, 5029 registry items and checked 115,367 files and folders. This time it just found the six suspicious items.

One nice feature of this product – as opposed to other I have used – is that it gives you information about the files rather than just saying something like ‘Tracking Company’.

There is something called ‘Protector’ that is running and this – it says – will tell you when Spyware is detected. It also has ‘Phishing’ protection and this is said to warn you about fraudulent web sites. I find it hard to know if these features work, I guess that you would only know if they don’t.

In the worst case scenario you could end up with someone stealing personal information and that could be credit card or bank details and so that could be disastrous. In another case you could end up with a non working PC and that is perhaps a more immediate – but potentially less expensive – pain to the first scenario.

Either way £25 seems to be a cheap price to pay for peace of mind, that is the price when purchased from www.guildsoft.co.uk site, select products, select security then click on SpyCatcher. I suspect you could save something by buying from one of there dealers so check around. To learn more look at the Guildsoft website where there is lots of useful information on this product.
