Norton Internet Security 2005

Image of author
It makes sense to have a range of Security products for the PC from one company. Perhaps even better to have them in a single integrated package.

Norton Internet Security 2005 is one such offering from the company that now owns Norton, Symantec. Then if any product fails to work with any other their technical support cannot blame another package from another company.

Anyone who ventures onto the WWW without Anti Virus and a Firewall these days must have a death wish, well a computer death wish anyway. Some people demand a Privacy Control, while a decent Anti Span package can cut down on the mass of Spam that seems to surround most email these days. Finally should you have young children you may wish to protect (sensor) their WWW activities. All these five products are in the 2005 Internet Security package from Norton/Symantec.

Norton Anti Virus

Some anti virus packages do not – by default anyway – cover email, this to me seems the most likely way for a virus to be welcomed into the PC. Yes there are other ways and should you browse the WWW then this is another prime culprit. The Norton Anti Virus package automatically scans emails and attachments for viruses and worms. Hopefully no one opens an attachment they were not expecting, but mistakes still happen.

Being able to rid yourself of a virus is the next most important task, this is harder as the virus writer tries to stop you doing this. Sometimes a virus can be quarantined but sometimes more drastic actions are required and for this you need good well documented help. The majority of people today are unable to work from a non graphical interface.

Norton Personal Firewall

A hacker loves an unprotected PC, some just want to prove they can do it, others are more perverted and try to steal information from you. Then there is the real nutter whose only aim is to cause chaos. The only way for you to connect to the outside world and be safe is to have a Firewall that makes your PC invisible to hackers. I am told the average time you are connected to the Internet before someone tries to get into your PC is 20 seconds.

Norton Anti Spam

80% of all email messages are Spam, in the home or Soho environment Spam is a pain but providing you check your emails regularly not much more than that. Most Spam messages are sent by machines searching for emails by using all logical combinations. I read somewhere that if .1% of people spammed replied whatever is being sold by the spammer is a success. There is also the more serious side often called Potential Frauds and most recent Anti Spam packages will pick these up, for example messages purporting to come from your bank asking you to input your details to update your records.

Privacy could be considered the domain of a Personal Firewall and to a limited extent it is however we all have some details such as passwords we would rather no one else knew and those who use Internet Banking or complete Tax Returns online this is even more important. Finally for parents of young children being able to block certain areas of the WWW is important.

The cost of this package that does all of the above and more all from a single interface from www.dabs.com is £44.65.
