Any disc over time will eventually fail and a few months ago my hard disc failed to boot, sometimes the reinstall of this section of the hard disk can then rewrite this important section but not on this occasion.
So instead of a new hard disc I purchased a SSD drive and then proceeded to transfer my complete ‘C’ drive to it and once done I had a PC full of life, booting instead of taking up to around five minutes was complete and ready to work in less than 20 seconds. Now I could reinstall my mirror image Acronis Backup.
It also means on my regular backups instead of it thinking about the size of the data that regularly took around 40 minutes before backing up started, now this part of the backup takes only around five minutes.
The whole backup now takes around 105 minutes whereas before it was almost five hours. There is a caveat to add that the ‘D’ drive although part of the original hard disc is now not included as the SSD drive is a lot smaller so the actual like for like saving is probably around 60 minutes and if I had USB3 ports it would be even more time saved.
At the start of 2022 I purchased a second user HP PC ‘My £93.95 PC’ unit and this does have a couple of USB3 ports so this helped me calculate the speed difference between storage to an external drive via USB3, as the main hard disc on this is not an SSD the initial thinking time is still over 30 minutes but then the backup itself is a lot quicker.
Of course anyone with a more recent PC than mine will have USB3 ports and probably a SSD drive so with those and Acronis and your data should be safe not only from viruses but also from people trying to hold you to ransom.
The 2024 version of Acronis is due out shorty and I will review it when it becomes available.
The current 2023 of Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office can be found for £55.99 on Amazon.
