Tripod Speakers
MP3 players continue to arrive in all shapes and forms, whether of the popular white variety or one of the many competitive offerings, as the means of providing our mobile music. Generally these devices arrive with a set of headphones which emphasises the personal aspect of these portable music players. However there are occasions when you might wish to share the music stored on the MP3 with family and/or friends. Sharing a set of headphones might be cosy but it does call for a degree of familiarity that is not always appropriate to the circumstances.
An alternative method would be to use some form of portable speaker set. One such product is entitled Tripod. Manufactured by The Novelty Gift Company (who makes "Wacky Gifts For Wacky People"), this product provides external speaker capability for MP3 players. Weighing 60g and looking a little like a gas lighter refill with a detachable safety cap, the Tripod's body, as you might expect from its name, opens out into three legs covered by a slightly raised perforated panels. While this arrangement of the legs holds the Tripod steady, it does have a rather flimsy feel to it.
One of the legs has a concealed compartment to hold the single AAA battery (not supplied) that should provide up to ten hours of power. An on/off switch, next to the battery compartment, allows you to conserve battery power when not in use. This is the only control element available on the Tripod. Any adjustment of output, such as the volume level, needs to be carried out from the MP3 player which connects via the 3.5mm jack plug which slots in its headphone socket.
At best, the audio quality you get from the three-legged device is adequate. This is just about what you would expect from a speaker rated at 0.5W x 2. The Tripod has been priced at £9.95 and it is available from Gizoo.
