This is a DAB and FM radio with presets, it is also a speaker for those who want output from the ‘Aux’ input plus it also has ‘Alexa’ built in. This oval unit has another big plus the ability to run from its internal battery for up to fifteen hours.

click image to enlargeI called it oval as it has rounded corners but in truth it is a 10cm cube when in use. The height when switched off is only 8cm. The on/off mechanism is simply by pushing down in the centre of the top and this releases the unit to show the display, push down again from any mode and the display disappears and it becomes 10x10x8cm.
On first switch on you should be given the option to set your language of choice. Despite a couple of attempted resets which should allow this option to be shown again my unit seemed to be stuck in French mode and as my French teacher had the most terrible case of halitosis I do not think anyone in my class took French GCE so if I can understand the StreamR statements I think anyone can.
There are three 12 sides of instructions called Quick Start Guides one of the three was English and French so this also helped and there was a 12x12cm sheet to explain the controls totally in English. However to try to get the unit out of the French I downloaded the full user guide which explains ‘the what and how’ of everything in clear statements.
The 60cm ‘Aux’ lead is wound round the outside of the unit near the base unroll this before first switch on to let the unit tune for DAB as this lead is also the DAB aerial.
Each corner of the top is also a preset so you can store four DAB and four FM stations very useful especially for those FM stations near the top end of the waveband.
If you imagine the top as a clock face with the centre of everything a multi function button that selects, plays, pauses, mutes and keep it touched to wake Alexa. 12 is Station and Track List the latter for Bluetooth connection to your SmartPhone. 3 for + volume or scrolling right with the display, 9 is – volume and scrolling left on the display. 6 is your source.
Which mode you are in is determined by a coloured band around the edge of the top, Green for DAB, Blue for Bluetooth, Red for FM and Amber for ‘Aux’. The display is a single line with characters of around .8cm tall.
Sound quality was good in DAB and so-so in FM providing you keep the ‘Aux’ lead extended but this as always depends on positioning of the unit. Bluetooth should be excellent proving your SmartPhone is nearby and ‘Aux’ will be as good as your recordings allow.
Alexa is clear and if you use her she should perform her tasks correctly.
This is the first Pure device I have seen for over six years but I still use one daily that I got in 2004 so a unit that still functions correctly after fifteen years gives some indication of build quality. The StreamR has a three year warranty.
At the time of publication the Pure StreamR is available from Amazon for £119.99 including free delivery.
