Japanese Crosswords

A trip to Japan involves the creation of Mosaics.

DIGIMIGHT would like to take you on a trip to the Land of the Rising Sun.  This trip forms part of the company’s Adventure Mosaics range of titles.  Your mode of transport for the journey will involve solving a number of Japanese Crossword puzzles which are sometimes referred to as Nonograms.

Following the example set up by previous DIGIMIGHT titles in the Adventure Mosaics series, this oriental journey supports the use of profiles allowing different players to tackle the game and have their progress recorded.  Sound level adjustments can be made with the game action being viewed in full screen mode.  Players are granted a choice of six different tile sets used to display the construction of the images during the Nonogram aspect of the game.  There is also a choice of playing the game in either Casual or Advanced modes which affects when numeric clues are greyed out after use.

This trip to Japan will cover five separate locations with the first port of call being Night City.  You then proceed through visits to Samurai Manor, Japanese Street followed by Bustling City before reaching a conclusion at you arrive at the Land of the Rising Sun.  Each location will consist of 30 levels of Nonogram game play as you create mosaic designed to fit in with the current location.

With DIGIMIGHT Nonogram style game play, you need to work with a grid that is made up of six layers that eventually come together to form an image.  Each layer, represented by a separate colour, consists of a grid made up of columns and rows with numeric clues running across the top and down the left side of the grid.  Using the number clues you can select which cells are filled in blocks along the column and rows using the layer’s colour.  Whenever a row or column features more than a single number clue then you must ensure that at least on spare cell should not be used between created groups.

When constructing a Nonogram, it is often beneficial to regularly switch between the individual layers.  This can sometime provide assistance by providing which cells are available or not in other layers.  You are also provided with a couple of Hint options.  These hints need to be powered up by gems located in certain cells.  One type of Hint will reveal whether a random cell is filled in or left empty while the other Hint will target a user-selected cross area of cells.

As you work through the 30 levels making up each location, you will encounter a number of rewards featuring parts of an image.  There are nine such image portions within each locations 30 levels.  Once found these image portions can be slotted together to form a scene that is relevant to the visited country.  The completion of this scene will allow you to move on to the next location in your trip.

Linking together the different locations of your trip will be cut-scenes.  Sometimes these cut-scenes also make an appearance part way through a location visit.  While well drawn, these cut-scenes tend to be rather basic and static.  They do include dialogue but this is limited to just text format.  Fortunately they do include a Skip option which allows you to quickly return to the Nonogram game play as you create more mosaic images.

I feel this game will really only appeal to committed fans of the Japanese Crosswords genre.  I downloaded my copy of this title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99.  The game requires a 1.0 GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and 204MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
