If you use coffee beans then you know that while it’s important to have them reasonably freshly roasted. Far more important is to have them freshly ground so while the ability to roast your own coffee is beyond most of us it is not that difficult to grind the beans as you need it. This grinder from Melitta gives you coffee shop taste without the coffee shop cost per cup.

click image to enlargeI am sure we would all prefer to have a machine to do it all and indeed Melitta do several, there are two major drawbacks the space required and the cost.
The grinder has a footprint of only 22x7cm and is 37cm tall.
It is fitted with a one metre hard wired lead to 13amp plug that emerges from the back base in the middle.
The bean hopper is removable and raises the whole by 13cm from the all-important grinder unit.
The bean hopper clicks into place and also turns through 180 degrees once in place to allow you to select the coarseness of the grind from fine to course with numerous stops in between to get exactly the grind that gives you the taste you want.
Below the bean hopper is the control unit with grinder behind it.
There is an LED display that by default shows the weight of beans that you wish to grind. This is set by using the + and – buttons on the display.
However not only can you grind by weight but also by the number of cups all from the ‘Select’ button and there is also a manual button.
Once ground the beans go into the bottom canister and from there into whatever coffee pot, filter arrangement or cafeteria you prefer. While beans can happily sit in the top section of the bean hopper for days without significant problems once ground they really should be used same day.
I know people who but packets of ground coffee from supermarkets and however short the shelf life it’s certainly not the day its ground.
In your favourite coffee shop you order the coffee they grind just the amount of beans required for your coffee and then make your cup of coffee that is why it tastes so good. In one I use they only ever half fill the hopper with beans and then immediately reseal the admittedly large packet even though it’s a bust shop.
As with most products today there is a multi-language manual here it’s twelve, with pages seven to ten in English that together with three sides of illustrations make the use of this unit easy to follow even if you have never ground a coffee bean previously.
Using is a learning curve to get just exactly what you like, there are a range of companies that fresh roast coffee and then despatch the same day once you find the find blend you like and it’s completed by grinding the beans as you need them.
At the time of publication the Melitta Calibra Coffee Grinder is available from Amazon for £124.99.
