Running the widely used Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) it has a 199mm (7.85 inch) screen. Its overall size is 200 x 138mm and it is less than 9mm thick and weighs 470g complete with its black slip-in case with stylish red stitching and lining. As one withdraws the tablet from this case it automatically wakes up, and vice versa, so is always ready for use.
The actual body of the Multipad is of brushed black aluminium with silver edges. The screen extends to the full size of the unit while the black bezel is just 10mm each side and 20mm at the top and bottom so that, while holding the tablet, one’s fingers don’t obscure the useful area of the screen. Its micro USB connector is conveniently located on the lower edge, the 2.5mm audio port on the top, while the power switch, volume control and nano SIM and micro SD slots all on the right hand side.
Having a 1.2GHz quad core ARM Cortex-A7 processor with 1GB RAM it is fast in operation while the 768 x 1024pixel screen provides good resolution and is ideal when using the installed OfficeSuite Pro 7 from Mobile Systems Inc. This suite provides file compatibility with a range of Microsoft and other applications so that one can read, edit and even create documents while on the go and so, overall, it provides the benefits of Android while meeting the needs of the business user. HF Scientific calculator is one of the other applications installed. However, this is the free version so the user would need a £2.45 upgrade if one wanted to get rid of the ads.
In addition to the internal 16GB memory, of which about 14GB is available to the user, the micro SD slot can accommodate up to 32GB of external memory. Altogether, this will enable the user to install as many apps as needed, carry as many files as wanted, as well as downloading plenty of movies for leisure time.
In this context the quality of 1080p display was excellent and the 4700mAh lithium battery seems to provide adequate playback capacity. (Prestigio claims up to 10 hours video or more than 20 hours audio playback times.) Google maps and the GPS receiver are of major use in ensuring that one will arrive at one’s destination while the e-book reader is another leisure time application.
Although the sound quality via the internal speakers was adequate, it was noticeably improved when using reasonable quality headphones. The front and rear cameras, 0.3M and 2.0Mpixel respectively, were satisfactory for Internet type applications and provided a reasonable range of controls including zoom, cropping and rotation and so would probably meet the needs of the business user needing to keep a visual record even though most people have come to expect cameras with much higher resolution..
Even though I would have preferred a flip-over case rather than the slip-in one, the Multipad appears overall to be able to meet the needs of the businessman on the move by combining compatibility with MS applications with the convenience and ease of use of Android in a conveniently sized package. Priced at 199EUR – about £160 – it merits very serious consideration for the user who wants a good business tool with 3G.
