When I think of Alcatel my thoughts tend to veer towards the company's brand of smartphones.  However smartphones are not the only product bearing the Alcatel brand.  The company also produces tablets that would appeal to users.  One such offering is the Alcatel IT 10 Smart device.  I have been looking at this particular tablet over the last few weeks.

Decked out totally in black, the IT 10 Smart tablet has dimensions of 255 x 155 x 9.4 mm (W x H x D) and weighs in at 415g.  The tablet has been designed so that its landscape orientation is the preferred option.  The tablet will insist on initially starting up, and even when it comes to the shutting down process, in landscape orientation mode.  It is an easy matter to switch to a portrait orientation if that is your preference, as you merely turn the unit through 90 degrees and your view of the tablets content switches accordingly.

Viewing the tablet in its landscape orientation, you will find the unit's user controls in the top left corner.  Here you will find the volume toggle and power buttons.  Mounted on the front and rear of this tablet are 2MP cameras for capturing still images and video at 720p @ 30fps. 

Situated on the left side of the tablet is a 3.5mm jack socket for attaching a pair of headphones for private listening.  Also located on the left side of the tablet is the new style Type C USB port that can be used with the supplied lead for charging the unit.  There is also an easy miss-able concealed slot, on the rear of the unit near to the USB port, for inserting a microSD card to expand the available storage up to 128GB.  As standard you get an initial 16GB of internal storage.

A surrounding bezel encloses the tablet's screen.  This screen measures 10.1 inches and is of the IPS variety.  It delivers 1280 x 800 pixels which automatically switched between portrait and landscape orientation depending upon which way round you hold the tablet.  The screen makes use of Eye Care technology.  This feature helps reduce the strain of the eyes that might be caused by long viewing sessions.  It does this by reducing blue light to relieve visual fatigue which has been known to have an impact on your sleep pattern. 

When the tablet is set up for child use, the Eye Care feature will issue regular reminders to rest their eyes and also use the tablet in a position that is beneficial to their eyesight.  Kids Mode comes with ad-free apps that are pre-approved for children's use.  Parents also have the ability to set usage times and select which other apps can be used by their children.

Alcatel has opted to go with a Mediatek MT8321 chipset to drive this tablet.  This chipset consists of a Quad core 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 CPU and Mali-400 GPU with 1GB of RAM.  The tablet's power comes from a Li-Ion 4000 mAh battery which is rated at delivering 450 hours on standby.  Providing the visual interface for this tablet is Android 10.  Currently this Alcatel tablet is available from Argos priced at £99.
