The Pebble Gear kids tablet computer measures 19x11x1cm without the slightly flexible cover and weighs 285 grams; the cover fits snugly and adds 90 grams to the overall weight.
The screen is 15.4x8.6cm this gives the notional diagonal imperial measurement of 7 inches.
The controls and connections are on the right side, first the on/off button, next a 3.5mm socket for headphones and then the micro USB socket and finally volume rocker with a micro SD card socket to its side.
Outside the screen on the front top right is a selfie camera and on the back in more or less the same position is the rear camera. The single speaker is the other side near the top, there are holes cut in the yellow rubberised cover so all the aforementioned bits are available.
On first switch on you are in adult/parent mode where you set a passcode, you also setup up Wi/Fi for the available software downloads, finally you set limits for the child like the number of hours/minutes use per day etc. Next time you switch on you are in child mode where the on Tablet content is available and indeed are the stated 500+ additional programs you can download, these are guaranteed not to have any online purchases and all the programs are free.
However here I am not sure that Snooker with a variety of table shapes and ball numbers would be appropriate for a pre-school child and even if it was it is not playable as it seems to need a controller to get beyond table selection and none is provided.
Other games do work but some others also do not however I have not tried by any means all that are offered and once you start downloading more they would need to be offloaded only a micro SD card which is not supplied.
Safely in the padded sleeve the first screen offers something like Howdy, Howdy child name or To Infinity and Beyond with choice on the left for Parent and More Time which need the Passcode to be entered or the Childs name on the right where entry to whatever is on the unit, the top line shows Battery State the Time and Wi-Fi strength.
The child presses his/her name and then is able to play anything on the unit.
There are a number of stories featuring Wall-E, Monsters, Inc. A Spooky Adventure, The Bunny Surprise, Woody’s Quest for a date, The Great Toy Escape, Toy Trouble, Partysaurus Rex, The Incredibles and Buzz’s Space Adventure. They all are read to the child with the words highlighted as the words are spoken each page also has a couple of images; this for me anyway is the highlight of what this Tablet offers.
At the time of publication the Disney Pixar Toy Story 4 Tablet from Pebble Gear is available from Amazon for £99.99 including free delivery.
