The unicorn is a legendary creature with a single large, pointed, spiralling horn protruding from the beast’s forehead. According to ancient legend the unicorn’s horn had the power to cleanse poisonous water and make it fit to drink merely by being placed in it. Further beliefs attached to the unicorn’s horn include the ability to heal wounds. It was also believed that the unicorn could only be captured and tamed by a virgin. Whether any of these are fact or fiction, the unicorn now has a new feature as it has been granted the ability to act as a Bluetooth speaker.
Reminding me, to some degree, of the horses forming part of a Hobby Horse ride on a fairground, this unicorn has a dominate white colour which is decorated with a grey nose,, yellow horn and a flowing mane with mauve, orange and yellow streaks plus a circular purple speaker outlet positioned on the unicorn’s chest. The presence of the speaker outlet gives the clue that this unicorn has been designed to act as an outlet for your digitally stored music.
Supplied with the unicorn is a standard-to-micro USB cable used for charging the unicorn’s internal 3.7v 200mAh battery which is rated at providing up to 2 hours of playback time when playing music being delivered via a Bluetooth connection,. The charging USB port is located on the rear of the unicorn, positioned near the base. While there is nothing wrong with the positioning of this port, I was surprised by the fact that the port was sunken into the body of the unit. This type of layout made it more difficult when attaching the USB cable as you could not see what you were doing. It also meant that you were restricted to using the supplied cable as many other cables of the appropriate type would be too large to fit into the sunken well.
Once you have managed to insert the USB cable into the port, the charging process can take up to a couple of hours. A red light will glow to indicate that the charging process is currently being undertaken. Once complete you can pair the unicorn with a smartphone. Arranged above the USB port are buttons for power and track control as you stop, pause and play tracks plus move forwards and backwards through a playlist depending on the choice of press used to activate the process.
Pairing the unicorn with a smartphone was straightforward and quick. However it quickly became obvious that the unicorn lacked any volume control and it certainly needed help with regards to delivering a level of audio more suited to my ears. Even with the volume level on the smartphone turned up to the maximum output, I had to sit alongside the unicorn in order to hear any output. Placing the unicorn speaker on different surface did help a little but not to any great degree. What audio you did get had a rather tinny sound to it. This unicorn speaker did not make for an enjoyable experience when listening to its output. The only really positive attribute of this product is that its battery lasted 2½ hours of poor quality of music delivery. The magic of this unicorn certainly failed to impress me.
Available from ThumbsUp.com, this Unicorn speaker is priced at £19.99.
