It has been a year since I was last given the chance to take a Bridge to Another World. Now Friendly Fox has offered me the opportunity to follow "A Trail of Breadcrumbs" by accompanying Gretel as she arrives in a strange realm filled with witches, hunters and magic. My ticket for this excursion comes in the form of Bridge to Another World - A Trail of Breadcrumbs which is a Hidden Object Adventure game that is available in Collector's Edition format.
When playing this game you are given the chance to adjust various environmental settings and select from four difficulty levels. The game can be played in Casual, Advanced, Expert or Custom difficulty. The volume levels for music, sound effects and voice can be adjusted. Scenes can be displayed in full or wide screen mode with a special cursor provided for easier access.
The game opens, as Gretel, attempts to make friends with a dog which leads her to a Gingerbread House. On coming into contact with a magical crystal, Gretel is whisked off to a strange land where this trail of breadcrumbs begins as Gretel discovers she now possess an amulet that can communicate with her as it delivers background details of the story and adventure you are about to embark upon.
Exploring the various scenes making up this land, you will encounter tools to assist Gretel in her exploration of the surroundings. Arranged across the base of screens are tools such as a scroll that will give access to a map, notes, tasks and achievements, There is also an inventory containing items collected, a recharging Hint feature, links to the game's Strategy Guide and Gretel amulet. When available for use such as solving problems or delivering the next section of the story, the amulet will emit a sparkling glow.
The world where Gretel finds herself is not as strange as it first appears as it was Gretel's originally birthplace. On her return to home, Grete; encounters a situation of a conflict between the villagers, headed by a group of hinters and two witches who have magical power over animals. Adding further confusion to the circumstances, it appears the leader. and driving force, of the Hunters is Hansel who may, or may not be, your brother. The game certainly delivers confusion from every angle as you will need to lead Gretel through a series of tasks that include mixing potions, learning more about the two witches who claim to be your sisters and discover the reason for the current conflict.
Not surprisingly this Bridge to Another World contains plenty of Hidden Object and mini game puzzles game play. An outbreak of sparkles will indicate the presence of a Hidden Object scene. Along with the actual scene, you could be presented with a list of required items to find. The list could be made up of text, with any item needing additional work being coloured differently, as one or two images, silhouettes or patterns. In some cases you might need to position rather than find items within a scene.
The game contains a variety of puzzle types. Some puzzles deal exclusively with logic while others rely on hand/eye coordination. You might need to create a ladder by using different items, put together a map from sections, navigate a maze or draw a specific symbol. In some cases you might be offered the choice of an Easy or Hard version of the puzzle.
Throughout the game play, this title delivers eye-catching animation sequences, with realistic animal movement, witches on broomsticks throwing balls of fire and other special effects. I downloaded my copy of this title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99. You can also download the game from Big Fish Games priced at £15.54. The game requires a 1.8 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 1.10GB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
