The R1850SB is a speaker system from the Edifier bookshelf range of products. With support for Bluetooth, PC, Optical/Coaxial and AUX input, this particular speaker system is made up of a pair of speaker units, remote control, a selection of leads and a small User Guide booklet covering a number of European languages. All the various components of the kit, apart from the colour coded RCA and jack 3.5mm plugs, adopt a standard black coating.
The two speaker units, providing the audio output, have been designed to sit at a slight angle, due to the rear height being approximately 24 mm shorter than the 254 mm of the front face, to help assist with the audio being delivered. Each speaker, whether acting in the role of a passive or active unit, is constructed of fibreboard with a detachable, cloth covered front panel. The sides of this cabinet has a distinctive wood appearance while the top and back have a more smooth, unblemished look to them.
As mentioned earlier, one speaker is passive while the other provides the active features with the various connection options. Permanently attached to the rear of the active speaker is a 160 cm mains power lead with a three-pin plug accompanied by an on / off switch. Arranged just above the power switch are dial knobs for adjusting treble, bass and master volume levels. The volume dial knob also doubles as the means to cycle through the various input modes supported by this speaker system. Situated to the left of these adjustment controls are colour coded connection sockets for attaching a music source from AUX, PC, optical and coaxial. Finally there is a connection socket for linking the active speaker to its companion passive unit.
The passive speaker has just a single connection option which is used to link to the active unit via the supplied lead. Even if it wasn’t for the DIN-like connecting plugs at each end, it would be hard to not recognise the linking lead forming part of this kit. It is far thicker and, at 490 cm, far longer than any of the other leads. The other leads supplied with this speaker system consist of a 3.5 mm to RCA audio cable (162 cm), RCA to RCA audio cable (164 cm) and fibre optic input cable (145 cm).
Positioning and setting up this speaker system is straightforward with illustrated instructions provided in the User Guide. The only real issue might concern the access to a power socket and this could be solved with the use of an extension lead to give more space when making a placement for the speaker system.
While the R1850DB speaker system can accept audio content from various sources (PC, AUX, optical and Bluetooth), it does need to be pointed towards the designated device. This act can be achieved by either pressing the volume knob on the rear of the active speaker or using the remote control. A small LED light on the front of the active speaker will glow red, green or blue to indicate the selected source of the audio being delivered by the speakers.
Each of the two speaker units feature silk dome 19 mm treble drivers and 4-inch mid range and bass drivers. The power output from these drivers adds up to a total of 70w split between 16w from left and right treble and 19w left and right midrange bass. This output would be fine for casual listening in a small and medium sized room. Edifier has priced this Bluetooth Bookshelf speaker system at £159.99.
