A Hungry Wolf

Delve into the realms of ancient Legends and you might come across a magical world that exists under the threat of a Giant Wolf swallowing the moon. This event would, not unnaturally, bring about the destruction of the world and its magical ability. This is the premise and opening sequence of the Friendly Fox offering entitled Immortal Love – Polar Lights.
Available in Collector’s Edition format, this title comes with a number of bonus items to supplement the main game. While some of the bonus items are available immediately, others will require necessary progress to be made in the main game before any access is permitted. This latter condition will apply to replaying mini games puzzles, Hidden Object scenes, video clips and a bonus chapter to round up everything.
The game casts you in the role of Astrid who discovers that the mischievous God Loki has accidentally turned your fiancé into a wolf. Keen to correct his mistake and, at the same time stop the impending Ragnarok threat from occurring, Loki offers to work with you to help restore matters. Thus this adventure game begins as, in the company of your new friend, you set out to face numerous challenges in this title with adjustable volume levels, full screen viewing capability with a special cursor plus a choice of Casual, Advanced, Expert or Custom difficulty level.
Arranged across the bottom of your view of this world will be the various tools that are at your disposal. These tools will consist of an amulet which has the ability to be used to implement certain tasks at appropriate stages of the game; a Map which will indicate your current locations and other places especially those holding collectibles, morphing objects and actions that need completing; an Inventory showing available items and whether they will require some work by being accompanied by a plus sign; Strategy Guide and a Hint feature in the shape of a heart.
Additional help will be provided by the mouse cursor which will change shape to indicate when certain actions are possible. This could happen when items are available to be collected, exits are available to move to another location, an area can be explored or a character might be available to conduct a conversion. When communication with a character, they will be displayed in full size mode with an accompanying thought bubble giving you some idea as to what they are thinking. The actual dialogue will be delivered by a voice actor and displayed in text format.
The game offers a variety of different challenges for this odd partnership of Astrid and Loki to face. You might need to play and win a board game, take ownership of a magical sailing ship, called Skidbladnir, that shrinks to pocket size when not needed, make use of the amulet mentioned earlier to learn more about the world, develop potions and meet characters such as Sigyn and Odin. On your journey you will need to rescue the Alfars people of this world who have been turned into plants as you explore some strange locations in your search for the Wellspring of Wisdom.
Along with these numerous tasks you will be faced by a variety of mini game puzzles and Hidden Object game play. Mini game puzzles will offer a choice of Casual or Hard style of play. The might be asked to while complete challenges that could involve moving items around, selecting pairs of runes, travelling through a maze and completing tasks that require hand / eye coordination. Hidden Object game play will sometimes require items to be replaced in a scene while text, patterns and silhouettes are used when listing required items which might be located positioned over different scenes.
I enjoyed playing this game with its well-drawn graphics, special effects and challenges even though the story line kept reminding me of a game that I reviewed a few years ago featuring a man who kept changing into a bear plus one or two other similarities. I downloaded by copy of this title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99. This game is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £16.42. The game requires a 1.8 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 1.60GB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
